The following information will help eliminate printing problems that are commonly caused by improper Printer Driver, Software or Internal Printer settings.

  1. Make sure the "Settings Locked" feature in the printer’s menu is set to no (not locked). When using a Rena driver, you must give the Windows software control over the printer or the printer will not perform correctly.

As a starting point, for setting up a Rena printer to work with a Windows program and Rena driver, it is suggested to perform a "default reset".
Default Reset = Power printer on while holding down the PROG key.
Note: Powering on while holding down the PROG key performs a "Non-Mechanical Reset" on the PS2000*, DA620* and XPS-80/90 (DA630M/A).
The information, in step 1, does not pertain to the Envelope Imager III printer model because it does not have a "settings locked" feature.

  2. Make sure the "Paper Size" is set to the correct length, and "local locked" within the printer. This is very important when using the DA608, DA610, DA612*, DA613*, DA615, DA616*, DA620*, DA630*and PS1000/2000/3000*models.
Even if your Windows software allows you to select the correct paper size, it is always a good idea to set and "local lock" the Paper Size within the printer.
Note: The information, in step 2, does not pertain to the Envelope Imager III or DA590/600 printer models because they do not have an internal "paper size" setting.

  3. Page Setup Guidelines (For your Windows Software Program)

When choosing the paper size, in your Windows program, do not select a "default" envelope size. Setting a "custom" paper size is preferred.
Note: It is OK to choose a "default " envelope size when using JetMate or FlexMail.

Set the page orientation to portrait.

Set the page height to the height of the mail piece (material), but do not exceed the  maximum print height of your Rena model.
Please see the chart below, for your printer's maximum print height settings.

    Maximum Print Height Settings:
To avoid exceeding the maximum print height of your Rena printer, be sure the page height , within your Windows program, is not set any larger than the printer's maximum print height, as shown below.

Rena Printer Model    Maximum Print Height
    DA590/600/606/607/608/610   No physical limit.
Depends on internal printer software limits and
     type of data being printed.
In most cases you should be able to print up to
12 inches in the normal (Nor) print orientation.

    XPS-3000*  1.5", 3", 4.5" or 6" (1.5" per Print Unit)

Set your page width to the width of your mail piece (material), but do not exceed the maximum print width of your Rena model.
Please see the chart below, for your printer's maximum print width settings.

    Maximum Print Width Settings:
To avoid exceeding the maximum print width of your Rena printer, be sure the page width, within your Windows program, is not set any larger than the printer's maximum print width, as described below.

Rena Printer Model    Maximum Print Width
    DA590/600  6.5 inches
    DA606/607  8.75 inches
    DA608  9 inches

    XPS-1000/2000/3000  ¹ 20 inches

¹ Depends on version of Flashware (internal printer software) that is installed.
In early Flashware versions the limit was 12 inches.

  4. Make sure you are using the correct Rena printer driver in your Windows program.
Be careful, anyone can rename a printer driver to whatever name they prefer. Just because it has a Rena name, or Model #, doesn’t mean it’s a Rena driver. Check the driver properties for the "Graphics Control" tab. If it doesn’t have a "Graphics Control" tab, it is not a Rena driver. It is probably a "Generic/Text Only", or "Standard/Text Only" driver that someone has renamed.

NOTE: The HP DeskJet 500 driver could be renamed to a Rena model #, and it may have a Graphics Control Tab.
When in doubt, delete the driver and reload it using an authentic Rena Driver CD. Rena Drivers (part number FM2-00-CDR) can be purchased on CD, from your local Rena Dealer.  In the Driver Information Center and  FAQ section you will find other tips on how to setup and use Rena Drivers.

  5. DA590/600/606/607 Users. If the problem is "slow print speeds", this is most likely caused by the software sending graphic data to the printer.
To obtain the best print speeds, when using the Rena Drivers, make sure you choose to print only Internal Printer Fonts.
For Example the DA590 has 3 internal Fonts (Cour12, Helv14, TmsRm12). The spelling and point size in your Windows program must match exactly. If you choose to print any font that is not an internal printer font, the information the software sends to the printer will be a graphic image.

NOTE: In some operating systems, Rena Drivers for the DA606/607/608/610, DA612*/613*/615/620* and PS1000/2000* have the ability to select how to print True Type Fonts. In the "Printer’s Properties" settings, you will find a tab labeled "Fonts". In the fonts dialog box, you will see the choice to "Print True Type fonts as graphics", or "Download True Type fonts as bitmap soft fonts". Choosing to download true type fonts as bitmap soft fonts will give you the best print speed.
The Rena DA590/600 models do not have the ability to accept a downloaded font.

DA606/607 font downloading limitation: If you get a "Memory Error" displayed on your DA606/607, when choosing to download fonts from your Windows program, you will need to add additional memory to your DA606/607. The "standard" DA606/607 has only enough memory to handle most 11 or 12 point fonts. It is also possible that you will need to update the Firmware (EPROM's) in your DA606. Please contact your local Rena Dealer to purchase and have additional memory installed in your DA607/607 or to updated EPROM's in your DA606.
Please be aware, that the "automatic true type font downloading feature", described above, may not work with a 1994 Version DA606. Also, you can not add memory or update EPROM's in a 1994 Version DA606.

Note to Windows NT/2000/XP Users of the DA606/607:
Drivers for these newer operating systems are available, however, since these models were developed many years before these operating systems were available, performance will be affected by the use of these newer operating systems.
For Example: When printing True Type fonts from these newer operating systems to a DA606/607 model, you will notice that it takes multiple head movements to print each line. This in turn will greatly reduce your throughput.
This symptom is due to the way data is sent from these newer operating systems to these older "line printers". Unlike Windows 95/98, where each line is preceded with a single positioning command; in Windows NT/2000/XP each word, or sometimes each character, in the line is preceded by a separate positioning command. These separate positioning commands cause the printer to make multiple head (cartridge) movements.
If possible, choosing only "internal printer fonts" will help reduce this problem. An internal printer font is a font, which is identical in name and point size to a font available within the printer. Example: Cour12. If possible, we recommend using the DA606/607 printer models from a Windows 95/98 platform.
  6. If the complaint is that "the internal printer settings keep being reset" when printing from a Windows program, this is "Normal"!
Example: Margins are reset to zero, fonts change, print quality changes, etc. When you use a Rena driver with your Windows program, you are giving the software the ability to control almost all of the internal printer settings. In order for the printer to work correctly, with the Windows software, you need the software to take control of the printer. To reposition the image, change the font style, print quality, etc., you should make these changes from within your software (Example: Set the left margin, in your software, to position the address where you want it. Set the font choice/style from within the software.).

NOTE: There are cases where using the "local lock" feature of the printer is acceptable. For example it is recommended to "local lock" your "Paper Size". It is also possible in some cases that "local locking" the "Print Quality" will not adversely effect the image being printed. You will need to experiment with the Menu Features that can be "local locked" to see if they will adversely effects the image being printed. Once again, if it is possible to choose the font, print quality, position, … that you want from within your Windows program, than it should be done from within your Windows program and not from within the Rena printer.

How to "Local Lock" Printer Settings:
To "local lock" a setting press the right most key on the printer’s keyboard while viewing the menu feature you want to "local lock". You will get the message "Local Lock: yes or no". Toggle between the choices using the Prev or Next key and accept the choice using the Enter key.
Note: The Envelope Imager III and DA590/600/595 models do not have the "local lock" feature.

* DA612 = Envelope Imager I, DA613 = Envelope Imager II, DA616 = Envelope Imager 2XP
DA620 = Digital Imaging System, DA630A = XPS-80, DA630M = XPS-90
The PS1000 controller is used in some of the XPS1000's.
The PS2000 controller is used in some XPS1000's and in all XPS2000/3000 systems.
The XPS-90 should only be used with FlexMail or Bulk Mailer; due to head positioning control features.
